# Bad credit car loans, without the lecture

A low score usually means something happened. A layoff, an illness, a split, a business that did not make it. It does not mean you cannot finance a reliable used car. People with scores in the 400s and 500s get approved with us every week, and the steady part of your life counts for more than the rough part.

## How people end up here

None of this is unusual, and none of it is held against you.

- **A layoff or a cut in hours turned a few late payments into a low score.**
- **An illness or an injury put the bills ahead of the credit card for a while.**
- **A separation left you with debts that were half yours and a score that took the whole hit.**
- **A loan you co-signed for family went unpaid and landed on your file.**
- **You have paid everything on time for a year, and the number still has not caught up.**

What actually matters

## Bad credit car financing

1. ### Your score is one number, not the whole story
The lenders we work with read a file from the income down, not from the score up. A steady paycheque, a few months at the same job, and a payment that fits your month matter more than what happened two years ago.
2. ### One application, only the lenders that say yes to files like yours
You fill in one short form. We take it only to lenders that approve this situation, so you are not applying five times, taking five credit hits, and hearing five no's.
3. ### Every payment moves the number
A car loan reported on time each month is one of the fastest repairs a Canadian credit file can get. The loan works for you from the first payment, and many buyers refinance lower once the file has caught up.

## Why a low score is more ordinary than it feels

A credit score is a summary of the last few years, and the last few years were hard on a lot of households. Rents went up, hours got cut, and one bad quarter is enough to push a score into the 500s. The lenders we place files with built their business around exactly this. A file with a low score is not an exception on their desk; it is the desk.

That matters for you in a practical way. A bank branch runs your score through a model and stops there. A rebuilding lender reads the file the other way around: income first, then stability, then the vehicle, and only then the score. That is why a 520 with a steady job gets approved while a 680 with three months of gaps gets a smaller loan.

## What lenders actually weigh

Every lender has its own grid, but the same five things move the answer.

- Monthly income before tax, and whether it can be shown with pay stubs, a job letter, or bank deposits.
- Time at your job. Three months is the usual floor, six is comfortable, and a signed offer letter can stand in for a brand-new position.
- Your rent or mortgage, because it decides how much car payment is left in the month.
- A down payment. Not required, but the fastest way to turn a maybe into a yes or to move the rate down a step.
- The vehicle itself. Age, kilometres, and resale value set the maximum term and amount. A five-year-old compact from a brand lenders like is the easiest file to place.

## What the approval looks like

Rates for rebuilding files sit above prime and well below the territory the ads warn you about. Where you land depends on the five items above, not on a promise from a website. Before you sign anything we show you the rate, the term, the total cost, and the payment, and we size the vehicle so the payment survives your worst month. A loan you keep current is the only kind that repairs a score.

Two things we do not do: stretch you to 84 months to hide a payment that does not fit, and add fees at the desk that were not in the number we quoted.

## Three things that make it easier

None of these are rules. They are just what we see working.

- Apply once, through one file. Five dealership applications in a weekend show up as five inquiries, and a scattered pattern reads badly to a lender. One application covers every lender we work with.
- Get the number before you fall for a car. Once you know the approval, you choose a vehicle that fits it instead of hoping a vehicle fits you.
- Put something down if you can, even a little. A down payment often lowers the rate enough to be worth it within the first year. If you have nothing to put down, apply anyway; zero down is approved every week for buyers with steady income.

## After the approval

An instalment loan with a real balance and a real history, reported on time every month, is the fastest single repair available to a Canadian credit file. Most buyers see meaningful movement within twelve months, and many refinance to a lower rate around the eighteen-month mark. We tell you when your file is ready for that call.

What to have ready

- Your driver's licence.
- Two recent pay stubs or a job letter. Bank statements work if you are paid another way.
- Proof of address, such as a utility bill or your lease.
- A void cheque or direct deposit form for the payments.
- A down payment amount in mind, even if that amount is zero.

Estimator

## What could your payment look like?

Move the sliders to see an estimated payment. This is not a quote. The real rate is set by the lender based on your file.

Questions

## Questions people actually ask

Can I get a car loan with a 500 credit score?

Yes. Buyers with scores in the 400s and 500s get approved with us every week. Approval depends more on steady income and a payment that fits your month than on the score itself.

Will applying hurt my credit score?

Submitting our form does not pull your credit. A credit check happens only after we have spoken with you and with your consent, and auto-loan inquiries made for the same purpose within a short window are typically treated as one by the bureaus.

Do I need a down payment with bad credit?

Not always. A down payment lowers the amount financed and often improves the rate, but zero down is approved regularly for buyers with steady income.

What income do I need?

Most lenders want to see a steady, provable income, often around 1,800 dollars a month before tax or more. Employment, self-employment, pension, and disability income can all count when they are regular and documented.

How fast will my score go up after the loan?

Most buyers see meaningful movement within twelve months of on-time payments, because an instalment loan reported every month is one of the strongest signals a file can carry. Many refinance to a lower rate after about eighteen months.
