Estimator

## What could your payment look like?

Move the sliders to see an estimated payment. This is not a quote. The real rate is set by the lender based on your file.

Understanding the number

## How the payment is calculated

1. ### How the payment is calculated
The estimator uses the standard amortization formula every lender uses: the amount financed, the annual rate divided into monthly interest, and the number of months. Biweekly is the monthly amount times twelve, divided by twenty-six. Nothing is rounded in your favour.
2. ### What the rate presets mean
Good, fair, rebuilding, and no history are starting points, not offers. Lenders price on income stability, time at your job, down payment, and the vehicle itself. Two people with the same score can land several points apart.
3. ### Taxes are on top
Ontario adds 13 percent HST to a dealer sale. Quebec adds 5 percent GST plus 9.975 percent QST. Nova Scotia charges 14 percent HST; New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador charge 15 percent. The estimate above is before tax; most buyers finance the tax into the loan, which raises the payment by roughly that percentage.
4. ### A longer term is not free
Stretching from 60 to 84 months lowers the monthly number but adds interest and keeps you underwater longer. Pick the shortest term where the payment is comfortable, then let on-time payments earn you a refinance.

Questions

## Questions people actually ask

Is the calculator accurate?

The math is exact for the inputs you set. The uncertainty is the rate, which the lender sets from your file. Use the presets to bracket a realistic range.

Should I include taxes?

Add about 13 percent to the price in Ontario, about 15 percent in Quebec, 14 percent in Nova Scotia, and 15 percent in the other Atlantic provinces if you plan to finance the tax, which most buyers do.

What payment should I aim for?

A common rule is a car payment under 15 percent of take-home pay, before insurance and fuel. If the estimate is above that, lower the price or raise the down payment rather than stretching the term.
