# Declined for a car loan? That was one lender's answer

A decline from a bank or a dealership feels final. It is not. A branch ran your file through one model with one cut-off, or a dealer sent it to the two or three lenders it happens to use. Neither of those is every lender. Files declined last week get approved with us this week, with a lender that was built for exactly this situation.

## How people end up here

None of this is unusual, and none of it is held against you.

- **The bank said no in an email that gave no reason, and you have not applied anywhere since.**
- **A dealership ran your file, came back asking for a bigger down payment than you had, and the sale ended there.**
- **You were three months into a new job and the lender wanted six.**
- **You arrived in Canada recently and the branch model had nothing to score.**
- **A late payment from this spring landed on your file the same month you applied.**
- **The salesperson had you set on a vehicle whose payment did not fit, and the file was declined for that vehicle, not for you.**

What actually matters

## Car financing after a bank or dealer refusal

1. ### A decline is one lender's grid, not a verdict
Every lender runs its own model with its own cut-offs. A bank branch has one grid and one answer. A lender that specializes in your situation, a new job, a thin file, a recent late payment, has a different grid where the same file passes. The file did not change. The reader did.
2. ### One file, presented only where it gets a yes
You apply once with us. We read the reason you were declined, then take the file only to lenders that approve that situation, at a vehicle that fits the approval. No scattershot applications, no five dealership inquiries in one weekend, no five no's.
3. ### Most declines have a fast fix
A different vehicle, a small down payment, proof of income that was missing, or a co-borrower changes the answer on most declined files. We tell you which one applies to yours before anyone runs your credit again, and often the fix is the vehicle, not you.

## Why a bank or a dealer says no

A bank branch does not read your file. It enters your numbers into an automated model, the model returns a score against a cut-off, and the answer comes back in minutes. A dealership works a little differently. Most send the file to the two or three lenders they have a relationship with, and if those come back negative the salesperson moves on. In both cases you got the answer of one grid, or three, out of the dozens of lenders that finance used cars in Canada.

The reasons behind a decline are ordinary, and each one is handled differently by a lender that specializes in it.

- Score below the model's cut-off. A bank model stops at the score. A rebuilding lender reads income and stability first and treats the score as one line among many.
- Too little time at the job. A branch often wants six months or a year. Lenders we work with accept three months, and a signed offer letter for a new position.
- No Canadian credit history. A model with nothing to score returns nothing. Newcomer programs replace the score with proof of income, address, and status.
- A recent item on the file, such as a late payment from a few months ago. A bank sees the recency. A specialized lender asks what happened and whether everything since has been paid.
- A payment too high for your income on the vehicle they were pushing. The decline was for that vehicle, not for you. A smaller amount financed on a different vehicle passes.
- A down payment request you could not meet. That was one lender's condition. Others approve the same file with less down on a different vehicle or term.

## What a decline does to your file

Less than you probably think. A decline is not reported to Equifax or TransUnion as a decline. The bureaus never see the decision, only the inquiry. What shows on your file is a hard inquiry, dated, from the lender that pulled it. Inquiries carry a small weight in the score and fade within a year or two.

There is one more thing in your favour. Auto-loan inquiries made for the same purpose within a short window are typically grouped as one by the bureau scoring models, because they expect a buyer to shop. So a decline last week does not lock you out this week, and a second application now is not a second hit if it lands inside that window. What does read badly is a scattered pattern, five dealerships across three months, each pulling separately.

## Why one application with us is different from five dealerships

Walking into five dealerships means five files, five credit pulls, and five salespeople each sending the file to the lenders they happen to use. Some of those lenders overlap. None of them was chosen because it approves your situation. With us there is one file. We read the reason you were declined, match it to the lenders that approve that reason, and the file goes only there. The vehicle is chosen to fit the approval instead of the other way around. People declined by their bank or a dealership get approved with us every week, usually on a file that looks exactly like the one that was refused.

## How to find out why you were declined

In Canada a lender will usually tell you the main reason for a decline if you ask, and some put it in writing. A decline letter tends to name one line: score, time at job, income, debt load, or the vehicle. That one line is the most useful thing you can bring us, because it tells us which lenders to skip.

If you were declined at a dealership, ask the finance manager which lenders saw the file and what they said. If you were declined at a branch, call and ask for the reason and which bureau they pulled. You are entitled to a free copy of your own credit report from Equifax and TransUnion, and reading it before applying again removes surprises.

## What changes the answer fastest

Most declined files do not need months of rebuilding. They need one change.

The timeline is short. A file declined last week is very often approvable this week with a different lender and a different vehicle. Bring the reason, the income proof, and the budget you had in mind, and we tell you within a business day which lender says yes.

- A different vehicle. A lower amount financed, a newer year, or a brand lenders value more moves the payment into the range the file supports.
- A down payment, even a modest one. It lowers the amount financed and the lender's exposure, and it turns a maybe into a yes more often than any other single item.
- A co-borrower with income or history, when someone in your life is willing. The loan is still yours and still builds your file.
- Proof of income that was missing the first time. Many declines are for what the lender could not see, not for what it saw. Pay stubs, a job letter, or bank deposits fix that.
- Waiting out a probation period. If the job is two months old, the same file at three months is a different file. We tell you the date to come back.

What to have ready

- The decline letter, or the reason you were given, if you have it.
- Two recent pay stubs or a job letter. Bank statements work if you are paid another way.
- Proof of address, such as a utility bill or your lease.
- A void cheque or direct deposit form for the payments.
- The vehicle or the monthly budget you had in mind when you were declined.

Questions

## Questions people actually ask

Does a decline show on my credit report?

No. The decision itself is never reported. Equifax and TransUnion see only the inquiry the lender made when it pulled your file. An inquiry carries a small weight and fades within a year or two. Nobody reading your file later can tell whether that application was approved or declined.

How soon after a decline can I apply again?

Right away. Auto-loan inquiries made for the same purpose within a short window are typically grouped as one by the bureaus, so applying with us this week after a decline last week is not a second hit. The file does not need to rest. It needs a different lender.

Why would a different lender approve a file the bank refused?

Because each lender runs its own model with its own cut-offs. A bank scores the file and stops. Lenders that specialize in new jobs, thin files, or a recent late payment weigh income and stability first. The same file passes a different grid without anything about it changing.

Will you run my credit again?

Not to submit the form. We speak with you first, read the reason you were declined, and pull your credit only with your consent once we know which lenders to present the file to. One pull covers every lender we work with, instead of one pull per dealership.

The dealership said I needed a bigger down payment. Is that true everywhere?

No. That was one lender's condition on one vehicle. A different lender, a smaller amount financed, or a different term often approves the same file with less down. Tell us the figure they asked for and what you have, and we work from there.
