# Car loans on pension, disability, or benefit income

A pension or a disability benefit is some of the most reliable income a lender ever sees. It lands on the same day every month and does not depend on an employer. Lenders count it, and people living on CPP, a workplace pension, CPP-D, or long-term disability get approved with us every week. We size the vehicle to the payment, and the payment to your month.

## How people end up here

None of this is unusual, and none of it is held against you.

- **You retired, the old car retired with you, and the bank treated a pension as if it were not a salary.**
- **A workplace injury put you on WSIB or CNESST benefits, and the car has to get you to appointments.**
- **CPP-D or long-term disability replaced the paycheque, the deposit is the same every month, and a dealership still asked for pay stubs.**
- **You are a veteran on benefits and need a vehicle that fits how you get around now.**
- **You are raising kids on support payments and the Canada Child Benefit, and a bigger vehicle stopped being optional.**
- **You have never missed a rent payment on ODSP, and you have heard no before you got to explain.**

What actually matters

## Car financing on pension, disability, or benefit income

1. ### Fixed income is stable income
A benefit or pension deposit shows up the same day every month, for years. That is the definition of the stability a lender is looking for. The lenders we work with count CPP, QPP, OAS, workplace pensions, CPP-D, private long-term disability, WSIB and CNESST benefits, and veterans' benefits as income, usually at their full amount.
2. ### Proof is easier than a job letter
There is no employer to call. Your award letter or benefit statement, plus bank statements showing the deposits, prove the income in one step. Last year's T4A or T4A(P) confirms it. Most files on benefit income are fully documented in a single afternoon.
3. ### The car is chosen to fit the payment
On a fixed income the number that matters is what is left in the month after rent and the basics. We work out that number with you first, then find the vehicle that fits under it, including one that fits how you get around. Age is not a barrier; the term is sized so the payment stays comfortable.

## Which income counts, and how you show it

Most people are surprised by how much of it counts. A lender wants income that is regular, provable, and likely to continue for the length of the loan. A pension or a disability benefit does all three, often more cleanly than a paycheque. Here is what the lenders we work with count, and what proves each one.

- CPP and QPP retirement pensions and Old Age Security. Proof is the annual benefit statement or the T4A(P) and T4A(OAS), plus bank statements showing the deposits.
- Employer and union pensions. Proof is the pension pay stub or the annual statement from the plan.
- CPP-D and QPP disability pensions. Proof is the award letter and the deposits. Because the benefit continues until 65 unless your situation changes, lenders treat it as long-term income.
- Private long-term disability from an insurer, and WSIB or CNESST benefits. Proof is the approval letter, the most recent statement, and the deposits. Lenders look at how long the benefit is expected to run and size the term to it.
- Veterans' benefits, including the disability pension and pain and suffering compensation. Proof is the award letter and the deposits.
- Employment insurance. Most lenders count it only for a shorter horizon, usually paired with a job to return to or another income in the household.
- The Canada Child Benefit. Many lenders count it as part of household income while the children are under 18\. Proof is the CRA notice and the deposits.
- Spousal or child support received. Counted when there is a written agreement or court order and the deposits match it.

## The honest part about social assistance

Provincial social assistance is the hardest income to finance on its own. That includes Ontario Works, ODSP, Quebec's social assistance and social solidarity programs, Nova Scotia Income Assistance, New Brunswick Social Assistance, PEI Social Assistance, and Newfoundland and Labrador Income Support. Some lenders will not count it as the sole income on a file. Others will, with a co-borrower, a larger down payment, or a modest vehicle that keeps the payment small. A file on ODSP with a few hundred dollars down and a parent or partner on the loan gets approved; the same file alone, on a bigger vehicle, usually does not.

We will tell you straight which lenders will look at your file and which will not, before any credit check. If the answer today is a co-borrower or a smaller vehicle, we say so, and we show you what changes the answer.

## The math on a fixed income

Every lender compares the car payment to your monthly income and to what is already committed to rent or mortgage and other loans. On a paycheque there is a story about overtime or a raise. On a fixed income the number is the number, which is a cleaner file to read. It also means the vehicle is chosen to fit the payment, not the other way around. We work out the comfortable payment with you first, then find the vehicle that lands under it.

Age is not a barrier. There is no maximum age for a car loan in Canada, and lenders approve buyers in their seventies and eighties on pension income. What changes is the term. Rather than stretching to 84 months, the loan is sized to a term where the payment is comfortable and the balance falls faster than the vehicle loses value.

A co-borrower helps in two ways. A spouse, an adult child, or a parent on the application adds their income to the math and often moves the rate down a step. The vehicle and the loan stay in your name with them alongside, and their credit benefits from the on-time payments too.

## When the vehicle has a job to do

Some buyers on disability income need a vehicle that does something specific: a higher seat that is easier to get in and out of, room for a walker or a folded wheelchair, a van with a ramp, or hand controls. Tell us that first. It changes which vehicles we look at, and it can change the financing. Adaptive equipment is sometimes financed with the vehicle, and some provincial and veterans' programs help pay for modifications. We work around what the vehicle has to do rather than starting from what is on the lot.

## What makes it easier

None of these are requirements. They are what we see move a file from maybe to yes.

- Bring the award letter or the latest benefit statement with the application. It answers the lender's first question before they ask it.
- Decide on the payment you are comfortable with before you look at a single car. On a fixed income that number is the whole approval, and a lender respects a buyer who knows it.
- A down payment from savings helps the rate more than almost anything else, because it lowers the amount financed against a fixed income. Even a modest amount counts. If there is nothing to put down, apply anyway.
- Apply once, through one file. One application covers every lender we work with, and auto-loan inquiries for the same purpose within a short window are typically grouped as one by the bureaus.

What to have ready

- Your driver's licence.
- Your pension or benefit statement, or the award letter.
- Two or three months of bank statements showing the deposits.
- Proof of address, such as a utility bill or your lease.
- A void cheque or direct deposit form for the payments.
- Last year's T4A or T4A(P), if you have it handy.

Questions

## Questions people actually ask

Can I get a car loan on CPP disability?

Yes. CPP-D and QPP disability pensions are counted as long-term income by the lenders we work with, because the benefit continues unless your situation changes. Bring the award letter and bank statements showing the deposits, and the income side of the file is done.

Can I get a car loan on provincial social assistance alone, such as ODSP or Nova Scotia Income Assistance?

It is the hardest income to finance on its own. Some lenders will not count it as the sole income; others will with a co-borrower, a down payment, or a modest vehicle. We tell you which lenders will look at your file before any credit check, so you know where you stand.

Is there a maximum age for a car loan?

No. There is no maximum age for a car loan in Canada, and lenders regularly approve buyers in their seventies and eighties on pension income. The term is sized so the payment stays comfortable rather than stretched to the longest option available.

Does the Canada Child Benefit count as income?

Many lenders count it as part of household income while the children are under 18, usually alongside another income source. Bring the CRA notice and bank statements showing the deposits. Child or spousal support counts too, with the agreement and matching deposits.

Will I need a co-borrower?

Not usually. A pension or a disability benefit at a steady amount is approved on its own every week. A co-borrower helps when the income is small next to the rent, when the only income is social assistance, or when you want the rate a step lower.
