# Getting a car loan as a newcomer to Canada with no Canadian credit

You can be approved for a car loan in Ottawa-Gatineau or anywhere in Atlantic Canada within weeks of arriving in Canada. No credit history is not bad credit, and several lenders run programs built for exactly this. Here is what they look for.

The short version

- Newcomers get approved with a job letter, proof of status, a Canadian bank account, and status with time remaining.
- No credit history is priced between prime and bad-credit rates, not at the bad-credit end.
- Start the licence exchange the day you apply; it is usually the slowest step.

## Time remaining on your status is the first question

Lenders want your status in Canada to stay valid for a meaningful part of the loan term. A year or more remaining opens most doors; less usually means a shorter loan term or a larger down payment. Permanent residents are treated the same as citizens for this purpose.

## What replaces a credit history

With no Canadian file to read, lenders lean on proof that the income is real and the address is stable.

- A job letter or signed offer letter from a Canadian employer, plus pay stubs once you have them.
- Proof of your status in Canada, such as your PR card or your immigration document.
- Proof of address in your province, even a lease signed last week.
- A Canadian bank account. Opening one is the first thing to do; the void cheque comes from it.
- Some lenders accept credit history from your home country through an international credit report. Ask us; it is not required.

## Your driver's licence

The loan can often proceed on an international licence, but the car cannot be insured or registered in your name without a licence from your province. Ontario, Quebec, and each Atlantic province exchange licences from many countries without a road test; the lists differ, so check yours. Start the exchange at the same time as the application so the two finish together.

## Part-time income

Newcomers with part-time income are approved less often but not rarely, usually with a co-borrower and a modest vehicle budget. Once you are working full time, you are treated like any other newcomer worker.

## What to expect on the rate

Newcomer programs price somewhere between prime and bad-credit rates, because the lender is pricing uncertainty, not a bad history. After twelve months of on-time payments you will have a Canadian credit file and can usually refinance lower.

## How much time remaining works

Lenders match the loan term to the time left on your status. Two years or more remaining gives you the full range of terms. Twelve to twenty-four months usually means a shorter loan or a larger down payment. Under twelve months is hard without a renewal in progress or a PR application filed; bring proof of either and it changes the answer.

## Bringing money from home

A down payment transferred from abroad is fine, but lenders want to see it sitting in your Canadian account before the application, ideally for a couple of weeks, with the transfer record available. Cash brought across the border with a declaration works the same way once deposited.

Questions

## Questions people actually ask

Do I need a co-signer as a newcomer?

Not usually. Newcomer programs are designed to work without one. A co-signer with Canadian credit can lower the rate if you have one.

Can I get a car loan the first month I am in Canada?

Yes, if you have a job letter, status with time remaining, and a Canadian bank account. The licence exchange is usually the slowest step.

Does the loan build my Canadian credit?

Yes. The loan is reported to the credit bureaus every month, which is the fastest way to build the file you will need later for a phone plan, an apartment, or a mortgage.
