# RBC car loans through dealers, anywhere in Canada

![RBC logo](/partners/rbc.png)

Royal Bank of Canada is the country's largest bank, and its dealer auto program is a prime program: clean credit, verified income, and a good payment in return. If RBC is an option for you, it is a good one. If RBC has already declined you, this page explains why, and what happens next.

The short version

- RBC's dealer program approves established, clean credit and returns some of the best terms on the bench.
- A decline at an RBC branch does not mean a decline at RBC through a dealer, and it does not affect the other lenders.
- An RBC approval is an open loan with no penalty for paying it off early.

## Who RBC is in auto lending

Most people know RBC as their chequing account. In auto finance, RBC is also an indirect lender: it funds loans that dealerships arrange at the point of sale, in every province, including Ontario and Quebec. The dealer program runs separately from the branch. It has its own approval criteria, its own terms, and its own turnaround, which is typically same-day.

RBC's program is prime. It is built for buyers with an established credit history, no recent late payments, and income that is easy to verify. Within that group it is competitive, particularly on newer used vehicles and on buyers who already bank with RBC.

## The files RBC approves

These are the profiles we see RBC approve through the dealer channel.

- Established credit with several years of history and no late payments in the last two years.
- A newer used vehicle, typically a few model years old with moderate kilometres.
- Salaried or hourly employment with a year or more on the job, or a longer self-employment history with tax returns.
- A thin file with a strong co-signer who holds RBC-grade credit, which is how some first-time buyers and newcomers get a prime rate.

## What RBC looks at

RBC reads the bureau report closely. Score matters, but so does the pattern: a high score with a recent collection is a weaker RBC file than a moderate score with a spotless two years. It also weighs total debt service, the share of your income that goes to all debt payments including the new car, and it is stricter on that ratio than the non-prime lenders. The vehicle is checked against age and mileage limits, and older or high-kilometre vehicles are shortened or declined.

## What an RBC approval looks like

An RBC approval is straightforward: a fixed rate, a term, and a payment, with no tiers to decode. The loan is open, so you can pay extra or pay it out without penalty, and it reports monthly to both bureaus. For a buyer who qualifies, there is little reason to look further, and we say so.

## If RBC has already said no

Two things are worth knowing. First, a branch decline and a dealer-channel decision are separate; a file that a branch adviser could not approve is sometimes approved when a dealer presents it against a specific vehicle with a down payment. Second, an RBC decline has no bearing on TD Auto Finance, Scotia Dealer Advantage or the finance companies, each of which reads the file by its own rules. Many of the people we place were declined at their bank first. That decline is where our work begins, not where yours ends.

## RBC where you live

RBC lends on both sides of the river. Quebec contracts follow the province's consumer protection rules and are offered in French. For a Gatineau buyer purchasing from an Ottawa dealer, the vehicle needs an SAAQ inspection before Quebec registration, which we schedule as part of the deal. The approval is not affected by which side the car starts on. In Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador the same program applies; the purchase follows that province's rules, with HST at 14 or 15 percent, a current provincial inspection and registration at the provincial registry, and we handle that paperwork the same way.

usedcarnearme.ca is independent of RBC and is not endorsed by it. Approval decisions, rates and terms are set by the lender on each file. This profile describes what we see placing files from Ottawa-Gatineau to Atlantic Canada and is kept current as programs change.

Questions

## Questions people actually ask

Will RBC approve a car loan with bad credit?

Not usually. RBC's dealer program is prime, so a bruised file is better placed with TD Auto Finance's non-prime program, Scotia Dealer Advantage, or a finance company. We present there instead of wasting an inquiry.

I bank with RBC. Does that help?

It can. An existing relationship with clean history is a positive on an RBC file, and RBC sometimes offers its customers a small preference on terms.

My RBC branch declined me. Is it worth trying again?

Through a dealer against a specific vehicle with a down payment, sometimes yes. Otherwise we move to the lender that fits, and the RBC decline does not count against you there.
