Rifco, full name Rifco National Auto Finance, is a non-prime auto lender headquartered in Red Deer, Alberta that finances vehicles exclusively through dealerships. Who Rifco is
Rifco National Auto Finance is headquartered in Red Deer, Alberta, and has built its book on one product: non-prime auto financing arranged at the dealership. It does not take applications directly from the public, and it is not a bank; every Rifco loan starts with a dealer's finance office presenting the file. Its dealer relationships are organized into regional teams, Western Canada, Ontario and Atlantic Canada, so the underwriting and dealer support are handled by people who work that territory specifically.
On our bench, Rifco is a straightforward non-prime program: it does not run near-prime or prime tiers, so it is a lender we reach for once a file has moved past a bank's comfort zone rather than one we try first for a clean file.
The files Rifco approves
These are the profiles where Rifco is a fit.
- Bruised credit with late payments or accounts in collections, and income that supports the payment.
- Buyers declined by a bank or a bank's own non-prime program who still have verifiable, steady income.
- A file with one or two credit problems rather than an open insolvency.
- A vehicle within Rifco's age and mileage limits for the tier it assigns.
What Rifco looks at
Like the rest of the non-prime dealer-channel bench, Rifco verifies income first: pay stubs, a job letter, or bank deposits for income that does not arrive on a stub. It reads the bureau for the pattern rather than a single number, weighs how recent and how repeated the problems are, and sizes the payment and the vehicle budget to what the income and the tier support.
What a Rifco approval looks like
A tier, a payment ceiling, a vehicle budget and a term, priced for a non-prime file. The loan reports monthly to the credit bureaus, so on-time payments on a Rifco loan are what move a file toward a bank rate on the next vehicle.
How to improve your odds with Rifco
The same levers that help on any non-prime file help here.
- Bring a down payment; it lowers the amount financed and can lift the tier.
- Choose a modest, newer vehicle within the limits Rifco sets for the tier.
- Bring income documents with the application so the file is verified the first time.
- If a collections account can be resolved or brought current before you apply, do it first.
Rifco where you live
Rifco's dealer teams cover Western Canada, Ontario and Atlantic Canada, and we place its files for Ottawa-side buyers and for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. It does not have an Atlantic-only carve-out; the same non-prime program applies, with registration and HST following each province's own rules, and a current inspection where the province requires one. A Gatineau buyer is placed with a lender whose network covers Quebec instead.
When we place a file elsewhere
If the file is close to prime, a bank or Scotia Dealer Advantage usually prices it better and we present there first. If the file is deeper than Rifco's floor, with an active insolvency or events too recent to show a payment pattern, iA Auto Finance, Santander Consumer or EdenPark are the next stops. We read the file first and present once, to the program that actually fits.
usedcarnearme.ca is independent of Rifco and is not endorsed by it. Approval decisions, rates and terms are set by the lender on each file. This profile describes what we see placing files from Ottawa-Gatineau to Atlantic Canada and is kept current as programs change.
Questions people actually ask
Is Rifco a bank?
No. Rifco National Auto Finance is a non-prime auto lender that finances only through dealerships.
Does Rifco finance vehicles in Atlantic Canada?
Yes. Rifco has a dedicated Atlantic Canada dealer team alongside its Western Canada and Ontario teams.
What credit does Rifco approve?
Non-prime files: bruised credit, late payments or accounts in collections, with steady income to support the payment. An open insolvency usually goes to a different lender on our bench first.
