Your situation / Newcomer to Canada
Car loans for newcomers to Canada, before the credit file exists
You arrived, you are working or about to be, and a bank said no. That is the bank's model, not you. There is simply no Canadian file yet, and a model cannot read a blank page. Permanent residents, newcomers with temporary status and income, and refugees with status get approved with us every week on three things a score cannot show: real income, a stable address, and status that lasts.
What are you looking for?
Free, about two minutes, no credit pull.
How people end up here
None of this is unusual, and none of it is held against you.
- You landed with savings and a signed job offer, and the branch could not say yes because the system had nothing to read.
- Your status is valid for years, your pay is steady, and the dealership still asked for a Canadian credit history you have not had time to build.
- You have years of clean credit back home, and nobody here can see it.
- You are studying full time, working the hours you are allowed, and the bus does not reach the job.
- You came as a refugee, your status is settled, and you need a car before the paperwork catches up with your life.
- You pay cash for everything, which keeps you on budget and leaves no trace on a credit file.
Car financing for newcomers to Canada
No file is not a bad file
A branch scores what the bureaus hold, and for you they hold nothing. The lenders we work with run newcomer programs that replace the missing score with three questions: is the income real, is the address stable, and does your status last long enough. Answer those and the file is approvable in your first month here.
One application, only the lenders with a newcomer program
You fill in one short form and tell us your status. We take the file only to lenders that approve newcomers, so you are not walking into five dealerships, taking five credit checks, and hearing five versions of the same no. We already know which desks say yes to this file.
The loan builds the file you need for everything else
An instalment loan reported on time every month is the fastest way to start a Canadian credit file. Twelve months in, you have a score, a history, and the file a landlord, a phone company, and eventually a mortgage lender will ask to see.
Why the bank said no, and why that is not about you
A credit score is a summary of a file held by Equifax or TransUnion. If there is no file, there is no score, and a lender running an automated bank model simply cannot say yes. That is the whole reason newcomers get refused at a branch, and it has nothing to do with how you handled money before you arrived. Canada welcomes hundreds of thousands of new permanent residents in a typical year, and nearly all of them start with the same blank page.
Lenders with newcomer programs built their desk around that page. Instead of a score, they read the file the way a person would: is the income real, is the address stable, and does your status in Canada last long enough to cover a reasonable part of the loan. Those three answers can be documented in your first month here, and that is why newcomers get approved with us every week without a single Canadian trade line.
Who newcomer programs are built for
Each lender draws its own line, but these four situations are approved regularly.
- Permanent residents. The easiest newcomer file to place. A PR card or confirmation of permanent residence, plus proof of income, is usually enough.
- Newcomers without permanent residence yet. Approved regularly when your status has a year or more remaining and the income is documented. With little or no income of your own, a co-borrower with income and a modest vehicle is the usual path.
- Refugees with status. Protected persons and resettled refugees with settled status and a documented income are placed the same way as any other newcomer file.
What replaces the credit score
Bring these and the conversation gets short.
- A job letter or signed offer from a Canadian employer, then pay stubs as they arrive. Contract and agency work count when the pay is regular.
- Proof of your status in Canada. A year or more remaining opens the most doors. Less can still work, usually with a shorter term or a co-borrower.
- Proof of address. A lease signed last week is fine. So is a utility bill or a bank letter with your address on it.
- A Canadian bank account for the payments. Open one before you apply; it is the one step that cannot be skipped.
- Optional: an international credit report from your home country. A few lenders count it; none require it.
Licence, insurance, and the order to do things in
The loan can move on a licence from your home country, but the car cannot be insured or registered in your name until you hold a provincial licence. Ontario, Quebec, and each Atlantic province exchange licences from a specific list of countries without a road test, but the lists differ, so check the one for your province, and each gives new residents a limited window to drive on the licence they arrived with. Start the exchange the day you apply. If your country is not on the exchange list, tell us on the form; we plan the timing around the test.
Insurance is the other thing to settle early. In Canada it is priced on driving history, and a newcomer with no Canadian history pays more in the first year than the same driver will pay in the third. Some insurers accept a letter of driving experience from your insurer back home, so ask for one if you still can. Get a quote on the exact vehicle before you sign, and count it in the payment. We do the same when we size the loan for you.
Part-time income, the rate, and the twelve-month mark
Newcomers with part-time income are approved less often but not rarely, usually with a co-borrower and a modest vehicle. A co-borrower does not need to be a relative; a Canadian friend or colleague with steady income and a clean file can stand beside you on the loan. Once you are working full time, you are treated like any other newcomer worker, and a signed offer letter can stand in for a job that has not started yet.
Newcomer programs price between prime and the rates rebuilding files carry, because the lender is pricing uncertainty rather than a bad record. Before you sign anything we show you the rate, the term, the total cost, and the payment, and we size the vehicle so the payment survives your worst month. After twelve months of on-time payments you have a Canadian file, a score, and the option to refinance lower. The car is the vehicle for building the file you will need for a phone plan, an apartment, and eventually a mortgage.
What could your payment look like?
Move the sliders to see an estimated payment. This is not a quote. The real rate is set by the lender based on your file.

Questions people actually ask
Can I get a car loan in Canada with no Canadian credit history?
Yes. Lenders with newcomer programs treat no history differently from bad history. With proof of income, proof of address, and proof of status, newcomers are approved with us every week, often within their first months in the country.
Does my status need to cover the whole loan term?
Not usually. A year or more remaining on your status opens the most doors, and permanent residents have no such limit. Shorter status can still be placed, typically with a shorter term, a larger down payment, or a co-borrower.
Can I get a car loan before I have permanent residence?
Yes, when your status has time left and there is real income or a co-borrower with income. The vehicle is modest and the term is sized to the time remaining.
Do I need a Canadian driver's licence before I apply?
Not to apply. The loan can move on the licence from your home country, but the car cannot be insured or registered in your name until you hold a provincial licence. Start the exchange the day you apply and tell us where you are in it.
Will my credit history from my home country count?
Sometimes. A few lenders accept an international credit report and give it some weight; none require one. Your Canadian file starts at zero regardless, and the car loan itself is what builds it. Bring the report if you have it; do not delay applying to get one.
